:: November 30, 2001 - Canadian Lunch ::
I got an email from Janelle in Ohio. Apparently this page was mentioned in a local newspaper there. Cool, eh? Prompted by my little bit about Canadian Myths held by americans she asked me questions about Canada and our cultural differences with the US. Thus the theme of today's lunch is Canadian Culture. Yes, Janelle, I call my winter hat a "touque" too. The word is French Canadian and refers to the hat worn by the voyageurs who explored the Canadian widerness years ago. I hope this all helps, Janelle.

On a sad note, former Beatle George Harrison passed away from cancer at age 58. Harrsion, lead guitarist, was the youngest and most mysterious of the Fab Four. He contributed to the Beatles via his songwriting as well, penning classics like "Here Comes the Sun" and "While my Guitar Gently Weeps". After the Beatles his career kept trucking along both as a solo artist and as a member of the star-studded Travelling Wilburys. A spiritual seeker, we're sure George is in a better place. We'll miss you.

Peanut Butter on a cornmeal bun. Very tasty. Not as Canadian as a bagel.

Diet Coke. Not what these guys drink, but oh well. But don't drink and drive in Canada or you may meet these people (they're our version of the FBI but with a red jacket, and a stetson - Dudley Do-Right is one!).

Werthers originals. I "liberated" these from Don's place last night. Don is an American who has come to Canada from Detroit, MI. However there are many Canadians who have entered the US with the hopes of infiltrating their culture. We Canadians may seem very polite and full of good humor, but we truly want to take over the world.

Chocolate Chip cookie. Called Tollhouse Cookies by some in the US. I learned that from US TV when I was a kid as it leaks across the border. I watched WLBZ from Bangor, ME with Eddie Driscoll. "We'll put it on for ya!" and "It's rininging in Orono!" There are some Canadian Movies and TV. WE have the CBC too! This Hour Has 22 Minutes is a great show, filmed in Halifax where I was born.

Stompin' Tom Connors - a great Canadian musician. The Guess Who (they sang American Woman) is Canadian as well. You can go sign a petition to help them get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
